  The indictment of Donald Trump by a grand jury in Manhattan has returned the spotlight on a woman named Stormy Daniels, a pornographic film actor whom the former president allegedly paid to buy her silence about a sexual encounter that took place in 2006. The payment — of $130,000 — was made in October 2016, days ahead of the presidential election, by Michael Cohen, a former lawyer and fixer for Trump. In August 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to — among other things — violating campaign finance laws in making the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels.
